What is GEDCOM and How Do I Use It?

What is GEDCOM?

A GEDCOM File is a file used within the genealogy software industry. It stands for Genealogical DATA Communication. It is the standard industry file format (.GED) for exchanging information pertaining to family trees and family history research. The format was developed by the Church of Jesus Christ to help genealogists.

The GEDCOM format is a plain text format, although different versions of the file format exist. New versions essentially carrying more data and are more easily integrated into compatible systems. Each file contains genealogical information about an individual or set of family members.

Metadata is also included which allows the individual details to be liked through a family tree structure and family relationships to be represented in a graphical format.

The majority of family history software companies allow the importing and exporting of GEDCOM files. This is particularly useful should you wish to change your family tree provider. It’s important to note that media files are not saved in the file format. Therefore if you are moving to a new provider, some time and consideration are needed to ensure media files are not lost.

It’s important to know what is GEDCOM and its uses in genealogy. The section below explains how to use GEDCOM within the OneFam family tree software program.
